| Abstract
| - Résumé. Le projet de contournement du village de Cantin (arrondissement de Douai) a donné lieu à un diagnostic archéologique réalisé par le Service archéologique départemental en février-mars 2009. Il a consisté en la réalisation de tranchées faites à a pelle mécanique suivies d’ouvertures de fenêtres en deux endroits. La carte archéologique mentionnait l’existence sur la commune de Cantin de quelques sites gallo-romains et médiévaux. En dehors d’une fouille récente menée par le service de la Communauté d’agglomération du Douaisis (CAD) au centre du village, il s’agit de découvertes fortuites ou de résultats de prospections pédestres et aériennes. Trois sites ont été repérés. Le premier comporte des réseaux de fossés et quelques fosses. Le matériel retrouvé se limite à quelques tessons gallo-romains. Fortement arasé, il n’a pas fait l’objet d’investigation complémentaire. Le deuxième site est très limité en surface, mais a été exploré en totalité. Il s’agit de deux caveaux gallo-romains construits en grès et d’une sèpulture à incinération en pleine terre. L’un des caveaux était totalement vide et le pillage du deuxième n’avait pas atteint le sol, préservant ainsi une bonne partie du matériel funéraire accompagnant le défunt. Le troisième site a également fait l’objet d’une exploration étendue. C’est une petite unité agricole médiévale composée de cinq fonds de cabanes, de neuf silos, de quelques fosses et trous de poteaux dessinant deux bâtiments. Des comparaisons avec des occupations similaires fouillées par le service archéologique de la Communauté d’agglomération du Douaisis permettent de proposer pour cette implantation éphémère une datation dans le courant du ixe ou du xe s.
- Archaeological Discoveries in Cantin (Nord). Gallo-Roman Parcelling and Vaults, Carolingian Occupation. The planned bypass road around the village of Cantin (Douai arrondissement) provided the opportunity for an investigative archaeological operation carried out by the Service Archéologique Départemental in February-March 2009. This operation consisted in digging trenches with a mechanical excavator followed by the opening of larger windows in two places. The existing archaeological map and records suggested for the territory of the commune of Cantin the existence of a few Gallo-Roman and mediaeval sites. With the exception of a recent excavation operation carried out by the services of the Communauté d’Agglomération du Douaisis (CAD) in the centre of the village, the existing record of findings had resulted from chance discoveries or from foot or aerial survey. However, from the 2009 work three sites could be spotted. The first was composed of ditch networks and a few pits. The material collected consists only of a few Gallo-Roman potsherds. As it was severely truncated, no further investigation was scheduled. The second site is very limited in area, but it was thoroughly explored. It consists of two Gallo-Roman vaults built in sandstone and in a cremation burial site in the open. One of the vaults was totally empty but the pilfering of the second had not reached the floor, thus preserving a large part of the funerary material accompanying the deceased. The third site was also submitted to an extensive exploration. It turned out to be a small mediaeval farming unit made up of five hut bottoms, nine silos, a few pits and post holes outlining two constructions. Comparisons with similar occupations excavated by the archaeological services of the Communauté d’Agglomération du Douaisis make us lean toward dating this short-lived establishment to some period in the ixth or the xth century.
- Overzicht. Het project van een ringweg rond het dorp Cantin (arrondissement Douai) was de aanleiding voor een archeologisch onderzoek door de archeologische dienst van het departement in februari-maart 2009. Er werden een aantal sleuven gegraven en op twee plaatsen een kijkvenster geopend. De archeologische kaart vermeldt voor Cantin enkele Gallo-Romeinse en middeleeuwse sites. Op een recente opgraving na, uitgevoerd door de dienst van de « Communauté d’agglomération du Douaisis (CAD) » in het centrum van het dorp, gaat het om toevalsvondsten of het resultaat van prospectie te voet of analyse van luchtfoto’s. Er werden drie sites opgemerkt. De eerste omvat een netwerk van grachten en enkele kuilen. Er werden enkele Gallo-Romeinse scherven gevonden, maar wegens de verweerde toestand van de scherven werd de site niet verder gezocht. De tweede site was niet zo groot in oppervlak, maar werd wel volledig onderzocht. Het gaat om twee Gallo-Romeinse grafkelders gebouwd in zandsteen en een crematiegraf. Een ervan was helemaal leeggeroofd, bij de andere was de plundering niet tot op de bodem gegaan, zodat een goed deel van het funeraire resten van de overledene erin bewaard waren gebleven. De derde site werd eveneens uitgebreid onderzocht. Het is een kleine middeleeuwse boerderij bestaande uit de vloer vijf hutten, negen silo’s, enkele kuilen en paalkuilen van twee gebouwen. Na vergelijking met gelijkaardige bewoning onderzocht door de dienst archeologie van de « Communauté d’agglomération du Douaisis » kan men voor deze tijdelijke bewoning een datering in de loop van de 9de of 10de eeuw voorstellen.
